Sichuan Takin

Scientific Name: Budorcas taxicolor tibetana

The Takin is a mysterious, heavily built, antelope-like goat adapted to the bitter cold winters of the Himalayan Mountains.

Sunset Zoo's resident male takin is BaoYu (male).

• Size: 3.3 feet to 4.5 feet at the shoulder.
• Weight: 500 to 800 pounds
• Diet: Grazers, eating a variety of plants and trees
• Lifespan: Average 16 to 18 years
• Habitat: Mountainous bamboo forests
• Range in the Wild: China

Conservation Status

Listed as Vulnerable - the major threat is habitat loss.
