[ARCHIVED] Do I Need a Permit for That?

From time to time, many of us have decided that we would like to build something to improve our homes and yards. That “something” might be a fence, a deck or a storage shed for the lawn equipment.  But probably not everyone would think to ask, do I need a building permit? Well, here is the answer to that in Manhattan!

Fences and retaining walls only require a permit if they are over seven feet tall. Be careful though, since fences can’t be built in a front yard or a drainage easement. Retaining walls also can’t be built in an easement, either.

If you decide you want to build a storage shed and it is not over 200 square feet, then you don’t need a permit. Any deck that is not more than 30 inches from the floor to the ground at any point doesn't need a permit as long as it is not roofed or enclosed.

Please contact Code Services if you have questions before building. Sometimes even if a permit is not required for certain projects, there are still setback distances from your property line in which you can't build.

You can call Code Services at 587-4506 for any questions. We look forward to helping you get your project completed!
